Step van conversions: a wide interior with a walk-through cab

A step van combines two useful features: a broad cargo body and a cab designed for walking into that body. If you like the room of a box truck but want an existing indoor connection to the driving area, a delivery step van deserves a close look. Its wheel boxes and door mechanisms are the details that often decide the layout.

A good fit for

A wide living area, direct cab access while parked, and a plan that can use the space above large wheel boxes.

Weigh the tradeoffs if

A narrow exterior, an uninterrupted floor across the full body width, or expectations of passenger-van comfort without further work.

The cab passage is already part of the body

Step vans are built for delivery work, with drivers repeatedly moving between the controls and the cargo area. That existing passage is useful in a conversion: after parking, you can step into the living area without going outside.

Compared with a separate freight box and cab, there is less reason to design a new connecting opening. You still need to decide how the cab fits the finished room. An insulated divider can separate the large windshield and driving area when you want privacy or temperature control.

The width makes rectangular furniture easier to arrange

A step van has much straighter sides than many cargo vans. The width can support a kitchen opposite seating or storage, with an aisle between them. Wall panels and cabinet backs usually need less shaping than they do against a tapered van shell.

Our 16-foot step-van template starts with a 93-inch bare width. It models the roof-corner taper separately. Treat those dimensions as a starting point: manufacturer, body size, and previous fleet modifications all affect the actual interior.

A wide roof also gives you options for solar layout. Check the supports, mounting method, and usable area around vents. A large rectangle on a drawing does not tell you how much load the roof can carry.

Wheel boxes decide what fits near the rear

The most important width may be the gap between the wheel boxes. Our step-van templates model a 41-inch bare aisle there, despite the 93-inch wall-to-wall width. These are template dimensions, not a guarantee for every delivery van.

A bed, bench, or cabinet can use the volume above a wheel box. A shower tray or floor-level storage compartment cannot occupy the same space. Lay out the wheel boxes before deciding that a wide body will accept any arrangement.

Compare this with a freight box whose floor sits above the wheels. That truck may offer a cleaner floor rectangle even if its maximum interior width is similar. Width at the wall and width at the floor answer different questions.

Keep the sliding-door pockets and entry path clear

Sliding cab doors can retract beside the front of the body. Cabinets, wiring, and insulation must leave room for the actual mechanism and service access. A door that opens cleanly in an empty vehicle may conflict with a new wall assembly.

Reserve the stepwell and the path from the driving area before filling the forward corners with furniture. Then decide whether the rear cargo door stays, gets insulated, or becomes part of a different opening. Check how each choice affects access, sealing, and usable wall space.

Evaluate the delivery vehicle as well as the room

A wide, open cargo area does not tell you how pleasant the vehicle is to drive for several hours. Test the seat, visibility, steering, ride, engine noise, heat, and cab ventilation. Delivery use and long-distance travel place different demands on comfort.

Body materials vary. An aluminum skin does not mean the frame, fasteners, or floor supports are free of corrosion. Inspect the whole vehicle, including roof seams, door tracks, and evidence of leaks beneath the original floor.

As with a box truck, keep the finished weight within the actual chassis and axle limits. Confirm service access and local shop support before enclosing equipment or relying on the vehicle for extended travel.

Before you choose a vehicle

  1. Measure the aisle between the wheel boxes.
  2. Mark the full travel of the sliding doors and their pockets.
  3. Reserve the stepwell and the route from the cab.
  4. Inspect body seams, floor supports, and mechanical condition.
  5. Test driving comfort and confirm access to service points.
