Length is the cargo floor behind the front seats; width is the widest point of the body. Dimensions come from manufacturer and upfitter specs, the planner accounts for insulation and paneling when it derives the finished interior, and you can replace any number with your own measurements. Payload figures are manufacturer ratings where published and estimates where not.
What to know
The walls curve
A van is widest at the beltline and narrower at the ceiling: a Sprinter runs 70 inches across the floor and about 60 at the roof. The templates model that taper from published specs, so upper cabinets meet the wall where the wall actually is.
Wheel wells are placed for real
The rear wheel wells sit where each van’s published overhangs put them, at their real size: 8.5 inches per side on a Sprinter, 9.9 on a ProMaster, 7.7 on a Transit. Anything you place has to clear them, the same as in the van.
The older vans are in there too
Beyond the Transit, Sprinter, and ProMaster, the templates cover the Chevy Express and GMC Savana and the Ford E-Series back to 1992, modeled from GM’s and Ford’s own upfitter specs. A budget build gets the same to-scale planning as a new Sprinter.
Common questions
Which vans are in the planner?+
Ford Transit (130″ medium roof, 148″ medium and high roof, and the 148″ EL high roof), Mercedes Sprinter (144″ standard and high roof, 170″, and 170″ EXT), Ram ProMaster (136″ low and high roof, 159″, and 159″ EXT), Chevy Express and GMC Savana (135″ and 155″), and Ford E-Series regular and extended. You can also enter custom dimensions for anything else.
My van is a different year. Do the dimensions still apply?+
Mostly yes: these bodies change little year to year, and the E-Series barely changed from 1992 to 2014. The dimensions come from manufacturer and upfitter specs. When in doubt, measure your own van and enter the numbers.
Does it model the wheel wells?+
Yes. Each template places the rear wheel wells from the van’s published overhangs and models their real width and height. The bed platform, the garage, and the water tanks all have to clear them, which is most of what makes van layout hard.
