Enclosed cargo trailer interior dimensions

Cargo trailers are sold by their outside size, so a 7×14 is about 7 feet wide and 14 feet long outside. Inside, the box is about 3 inches shorter than the nominal length and 3 to 4 inches narrower than the nominal width. A V-nose adds floor at the front, deepest at the centerline. On 6 and 7 ft trailers the wheels are outside the walls, so the floor is flat from wall to wall. On 8.5 ft trailers the wheels sit under the box, and a wheel box comes up on each side.

What are the inside dimensions of a 7×14 enclosed trailer?+

About 165 inches of full-width box plus a 20-inch V-nose, 81 inches wide and 78 inches tall inside. Wall construction varies by manufacturer, so measure the trailer you are buying.

Does payload depend on the axles?+

Yes. Payload is the axle rating minus the trailer’s own weight. A 6×12 with tandem axles carries far more than a single-axle 6×12, which carries about 1,700 lb.

How much space do insulation and paneling take?+

The finished figures on this page allow about 1 inch per surface: each side wall, the ceiling, the floor, and the front wall. The rear is the door. A cold-climate build with thicker insulation takes more. In the planner you can choose the build-out level, or enter your own measurements.
