U-Haul truck interior dimensions

The 15, 20 and 26 ft U-Haul trucks have a raised shelf over the cab, which U-Haul calls the Mom’s Attic. The total inside length includes that shelf. The flat floor below it is shorter. The 10 ft truck has no shelf. Used U-Haul trucks are a common starting point for box truck conversions.

Total length runs to the front of the Mom’s Attic. The flat floor length is listed separately for each truck.

Common questions

Why is the 15 ft U-Haul shorter than 15 feet inside?+

The 15 ft size includes the Mom’s Attic over the cab. Inside, the truck is 174 inches long at the attic level, with 143 inches of flat floor, just under 12 feet. A box truck seller would call it a 12 or 14 footer.

Can you build on the Mom’s Attic?+

Yes. Builders use it for storage or a sleeping platform. In the planner you can place items on the shelf at its published height.

How much space do insulation and paneling take?+

The finished figures on this page allow about 1 inch per surface: each side wall, the ceiling, the floor, and the front wall. The rear is the door. A cold-climate build with thicker insulation takes more. In the planner you can choose the build-out level, or enter your own measurements.
