School bus and shuttle bus interior dimensions

Full-size school buses have about the same body width and height, so length is the main choice. A Type C has a hood in front of the driver. A Type D has a flat front, which adds about 2 feet of floor at the same overall length. The Type A short bus and the shuttle bus are cutaway bodies on a Ford E-350 or E-450 van chassis.

Length is the buildable floor behind the driver.

The transit-style skoolie: no hood, so a 40 ft bus gives ~34 ft of floor instead of ~32. This model leaves out two things. A rear-engine bus steps up over the engine for the last ~4 ft, where most builds put the bed. The front arches also intrude near the door, and only the rear pair is drawn.

Common questions

How wide is a school bus inside?+

About 90¾ inches for the full-size Type C and Type D bodies listed here. The rear wheel wells take about 21 inches each, which leaves about 49 inches of floor between them.

How much floor does a 40 ft school bus have?+

About 32 feet behind the driver on a Type C, and about 34 feet on a Type D. On a rear-engine Type D, the last 4 feet or so step up over the engine.

How much space do insulation and paneling take?+

The finished figures on this page allow about 1 inch per surface: each side wall, the ceiling, the floor, and the front wall. The rear is the door. A cold-climate build with thicker insulation takes more. In the planner you can choose the build-out level, or enter your own measurements.
